It can be overwhelming trying to do all the things we know we should be doing every day to stay healthy! Some days are better than others, but there are some basic things we can focus on every day that are crucial to achieving and maintaining good health.
- STRETCH - Make a habit out of stretching when you wake up. It boosts circulation, maintains flexibility, aids in digestion and can help prevent injury. Daily use of muscles can cause them to get tight, especially if you regularly carry a purse, groceries or even worse small children! The more weight you ask your body to take on, the tighter your muscles can get, which can lead to nagging aches and pains or even injuries. As we age, our flexibility decreases significantly, stretching daily can help maintain flexibility, thereby improving everyday movements and while enhancing an individual's overall sense of balance and awareness.
- SLEEP - We all feel better, happier and more energized when we’ve had a good night’s rest. Getting enough sleep is a key part of achieving overall health and wellness. Sleep can benefit your heart, weight, mood, mind, and productivity. When your body is sleep deprived, it goes into a state of stress. Your body’s functions go into an immediate alert state which causes an increase in blood pressure and a production of stress hormones. Higher blood pressure will increase your risk for heart attacks and strokes. People without enough sleep can also suffer from a deficiency in serotonin which has been linked to depression. Sleep is the time for your body to repair damage caused by stress, ultraviolet rays and other harmful chemicals and toxins that we are exposed to daily. Your cells produce more protein while you are at rest and these protein molecules form the building blocks for cells, allowing them to repair the damage.
- DRINK WATER - Our bodies require water to survive. Without water, our bodies do not function properly - we can’t maintain proper temperature, our joints do not stay lubricated and we don’t properly eliminate waste. Dehydration can cause you to experience fatigue, headaches, confusion, dizziness and an overall sense of being run down. Water makes up over half of our body weight and we can easily become dehydrated without realizing it. Water is essential to overall health and wellness.
